Just when I was making myself at home...

LiveJournal ... has cut about 20 of 28 employees — and offered them no severance (spotted via [livejournal.com profile] nicnac). As veterans of the last dotcom crash know, websites have a nasty habit of disappearing overnight, leaving a deafening silence in the void.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'd highly suggest backing up all entries, and figuring out an alternative solution for blogging, just in case. Which is a huge shame, because the friends-feature on LJ is something I just have not found anywhere else. Any suggestions for backups or alternatives?

Anyway, in case the Nostromo signs off, I'm also to be found on almostwitty.com

UPDATE: Backup options available from LJ, LJBook and LJArchive

UPDATE 2: The end is not yet, in fact, nigh. at least not yet.

Wow - thank you so much for the warning. I'm passing this along to all my LJ friends.

LJBook is at max right now, everyone is backingup apparently, I am going to try LJ.

Paul started at SixApart back when they were just that - 6 kids. Then they started LJ, and then the Russians came, and then the huge server move in the middle of an economic downturn, and well, surprise surprise people are going to get laid off.

The similar platforms running on the same code (greatestjournal, deadjournal, etc) may fade away too and for the same reason. Hell, the whole net will eventually. Grumble. Best bet for blogging IMO is Wordpress hosted on your own domain. It sure doesn't have the friends aspect though :(

Thank you for this info. Much appreciated.

I can't even begin to convey how absolutely devastated I would be if this place bombed.

What do I think?
I think I will probably have a major breakdown! This is my place to leave MY fucked-up world and enjoy everyone else's for a bit. This is my place to spout off ridiculous thoughts that enter my head, and keep track of my life considering my memory is one of the worst ever created.
*sigh* I don't know what I would do!

Naturally, but I am also a creature of habit, which makes things difficult at times. I've been here since '02 or '03, switching to something else would be pretty frustrating for me.

LJ is not going away. Valleywag's article was wrong in a number of ways. For a start, 12 were laid off, not 20.

One of my good Chicago friends works for them remotely.
