Over in the UK, the Easter 4-day holiday weekend is just getting underway, with most people (in offices) getting Good Friday and Easter Monday off. You know it’s a special time because there’s some TV specials too, with all-new special episodes of Doctor Who and Red Dwarf. That is, if you live your life by television…

Over in the US, as far as I can tell, not many people have Good Friday off. Or Easter Monday. There don’t seem to be any special TV shows being broadcast this weekend, and everything still seems to be open. Which seems odd - after all, even Americans get Christmas off, so why not Easter? It just doesn’t make any sense!

Luckily, this Easter I am in Cleveland, Ohio, and eschewing the joys of the Rock’n'Roll Hall of Fame and a city-sightseeing trolley tour that takes in “one of America’s premiere medical centres” for the chance to shoot some guns in Michael Bay-esque cornfields, and join in a few Easter Egg hunts.

My sister got to go to the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame last summer. Lucky brat! LOL!!!

My husband spent quite a bit of time at the Cleveland Clinic before we were dating.

it's because Christmas isn't a church holiday. Not the one we celebrate, anyway. Sure, Christmas and easter are the big Jesus holidays here. But when the nation was founded (and in many places still) easter is big and Christmas is not a big holiday (fun fact, one of the reasons that puritans came here was to get away from the big Christmas celebration which they thought was mildly heretical).

We celebrate American holidays. Christmas = shopping. Thanksgiving = food and the day after is shopping. Easter is about the baskets and small toys, so it's not as big a holiday. Halloween is bigger than easter because there's more candy.

basically, the more you can eat or spend, the more we like a holiday.

Time off - usually it is one or the other.. not both days. Then again in recent years.. ti's been neither. I've found working for a company that follows the Jewish calendar gives you something of the best of both worlds. you get all their holidays automatically - plus a selection of your own. add in vacation days and.. :D *cough*

I'm waiting to hear about both DW and RD eps. I imagine they'll be good. I'm also hoping someone will make an icon of that holostag at the end of the ad .. I want it. what I'll use it for i have no idea.. but it's cool.

In Canada, everyone with a government job gets both Good Friday and Easter Monday off. Most people who don't have gov't jobs get one or the other off I think.
