Americans! Where’s your Easter holiday?
Apr. 10th, 2009 03:24 pmOver in the UK, the Easter 4-day holiday weekend is just getting underway, with most people (in offices) getting Good Friday and Easter Monday off. You know it’s a special time because there’s some TV specials too, with all-new special episodes of Doctor Who and Red Dwarf. That is, if you live your life by television…
Over in the US, as far as I can tell, not many people have Good Friday off. Or Easter Monday. There don’t seem to be any special TV shows being broadcast this weekend, and everything still seems to be open. Which seems odd - after all, even Americans get Christmas off, so why not Easter? It just doesn’t make any sense!
Luckily, this Easter I am in Cleveland, Ohio, and eschewing the joys of the Rock’n'Roll Hall of Fame and a city-sightseeing trolley tour that takes in “one of America’s premiere medical centres” for the chance to shoot some guns in Michael Bay-esque cornfields, and join in a few Easter Egg hunts.

Date: 2009-04-10 04:56 pm (UTC)We celebrate American holidays. Christmas = shopping. Thanksgiving = food and the day after is shopping. Easter is about the baskets and small toys, so it's not as big a holiday. Halloween is bigger than easter because there's more candy.
basically, the more you can eat or spend, the more we like a holiday.
