By Federal law, hospitals cannot refuse to treat someone who shows up in the emergency room. That doesn't mean you won't get a bill collector on your arse later on if you don't pay their ridiculous expenses, or that you'll necessarily get the care you need - it's more like a "patch 'em up and get 'em out" procedure.
