At least according to good ol' BBC News - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7405373.stm

Which is quite a shame - there's little potential of witty banter or wordplay if your conversation revolves around boasting about how great you are.

Here's to witty self-depreciation!

(or is that just me?)

I think the trick is to be so darn good that even in todays reduced attention span world everyone knows it. Then you can afford to be self-depreciating. In the old days when people actually cared for each other, a certain amount of making light of ones problems was expected. Now days it seems if you tell someone you are a bumbler, they take what you say at face value, because we have lost our eye for humor.

It isn't just you. Self-depreciation is far more interesting than boasting. Whenever I speak with someone that is really talking themselves up I get the distinct impression that they're trying to convince themselves of what they are saying at least as much as they are trying to convince me.
