Which is quite a shame - there's little potential of witty banter or wordplay if your conversation revolves around boasting about how great you are.

It isn't just you. Self-depreciation is far more interesting than boasting. Whenever I speak with someone that is really talking themselves up I get the distinct impression that they're trying to convince themselves of what they are saying at least as much as they are trying to convince me.
