Why do spammers and Egyptians want Chinese women?

As anyone who runs a blog knows, you tend to get a LOT of spam comments, which are luckily filtered out by most blogging systems. However, this particular one caught my eye today:

“the thing i like about asian women are those long flowing straight hair and those chinky eyes”

I really hope that’s not an excerpt from some poor chap’s dating profile, because I doubt he’s going to get much of a lookup. Imagine if your chat-up line was: “Ooooh I just love your chinky eyes”. That’d be pretty much the same as saying “Oooh I just love your nigger lips”.

(And yes, I thought about censoring the n-word from that sentence, but really, if I’m not going to censor the c-word, then I can’t then go and censor the n-word. Complicated racial politics that come into what was initially a simple blogpost about a spam comment. Oh dear.)

But then I wonder why Chinese women are so highly sought-after. Apparently, Egyptian men can now be added to the list of men around the world who want Chinese women. According to the article from Al Arabiya (which was also quoted in BBC News, but I can’t find the link now), Chinese women are prized for their “Obedience and loyalty”. I’ve got three sisters. None of them are particularly obedient, and I have the scars to prove it.

Tbh I think some of it is confirmation bias. At least one study (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_fetish#Columbia_study_on_racial_preferences_in_dating) has found that white men are no more likely to want to date Asian women than women from other backgrounds. If the two groups end up together more often, it appears to be a preference on the part of Asian women.

I've known quite a few Asian women, mostly Japanese, and not a one of them fitted the Demure And Loyal Fading Oriental Lotus Blossom schtick. In fact, most of them were pretty loud and crude. And really funny, for some reason.

Also - I can't speak for the entirety of east Asia but I do wonder if a bit of Japanese male paranoia fuels the whole white-dudes-banging-Asian-chicks thing.

IME, the racist stereotype of white men in Japan is broadly similar to the racist stereotype of black people in less-enlightened societies: big thuggish uncultured savages with huge penises who'll rape your daughter (note: I am not seeking to compare the racism white people experience with that black people experience, which would clearly be absurd).

I'm not so sure that it's that white men are seen as big savages with huge cocks, rather that - until comparatively recently - Asian men just weren't seen as teh sex bomb. Most famous white man in film? Tom Cruise etc. Most famous Chinese man in film? Jackie Chan. (Although to be fair Chan has fathered a few daughters out of wedlock, shall we say...)

Certainly, when I went to the Chinese Society meetings at universities, they would inevitably end with the Chinese ladies going off with the white men at nightclubs leaving other Chinese men to sob into their beer bottles. And all my sisters are with non-Chinese blokes.

Then again, my wife is amazed that I think Asian men are generally considered unsexy in media terms.

I've been with Jim for over 13 years now, so opportunties such as the lovely G have been turned down.

I don't think I'd met many people of Chinese origin prior to travelling now I think about it, there was a rainbow of nationalities on my law course (mostly Korean and Israeli), but few Chinese.

Y'know, I can't think of a single Hollywood movie with an Asian male romantic lead.

If you get women of an ethnic minority in a predominantly white nation marrying outside said minority it may be down to nothing more than there being a lot more white men than Asian men. That said, a friend (another Wong, actually) who I sadly have drifted apart from told me that a lot of her BBC female friends didn't particularly want to marry Chinese men because they tend to expect their wives to be the little woman.

Incidentally, I feel really sorry for Asian actors. Whenever you see an Asian character in something or other they're one of about four different stereotypes.

You can just imagine them getting calls from their agents: "Hey, I got you a job!" "Oh yeah? What as?" "Well, it's a.. um.. *cough* ninjakungfumaster BUT IT'S A GREAT JOB"

I used to know a Chinese gay actor, who was relatively unique in managing to hit pretty much most of the stereotypes you can think of in both sectors. Very camp, and by day was an accountant.

He'd complain/bitch about Chinese actors being stereotyped. Lo and behold, he ends up being the sing-song Chinese actor with a sing-song voice in Peter Jackson's King Kong. Although he got very well-paid for it.

I used to think Chinese men were the most whiny motherf'kers in the world. Then I fell into a group of Chinese actors.

That is undoubtedly the main cause - you have to WANT to marry a Chinese person, in order to marry a Chinese person. Like my cousin.

And yeah, the stereotypical assumption that I, as a Chinese man, want a subservient woman, is somewhat odd. I remember once being asked on a dating profile if I'd be the Chinese master to this guy's wife...

She is super hot. But I'm not sure that being black/korean is enough to ensure that the phrase "chinky eyes" turns you on. You have to be a little freaky, too.

Also, i don't know if the flavor of asian eyes matters much. It seems like this hypothetical person is not particularly racially sensitive (though they might be. What you say in the bedroom should never be used as a meter by which to judge you as a person, or I'm a really bad dude).
